Students learn bread-making as part of NCS award

Eight Sutherland House School students this academic year have earned an NCS award, a nationally recognised and accredited course ran by Portland College.
The National Citizen Service (NCS) is all about helping young people get ahead in life – learning some fantastic new skills, meeting some amazing new people, and finding out how to make a real difference in the local community.
Three students, who completed their NCS award this February, have completed the course with a 100% attendance record.
The course, which took place over three days, included activities like ziplining, archery and making bread.
Making the bread
On the third day of the course, the morning session focused on how to make and bake bread on an open fire.
Students chose some sticks that were whittled by a NCS team leader and made the bread in the classroom.
Students learned to weave an herb and chocolate mixture around the stick to apply it correctly. All three students enjoyed baking it on the fire, eating both flavours.

Massive congratulations to the three students from Key Stage 4, who are the eighth group of students to graduate with a 100% attendance record and the NCS award. The NCS award is a fantastic addition to any CV or resume and is recognised nationally as an endorsement of hard work, resilience, and community action.
Portland College were full of praise and extremely positive about our students. They've all been invited back in the future for team building days and new challenges! We hope we can continue to work with them and take a new cohort next academic year.
