Students achieve NCS award at Portland College

Five students from Key Stage 4 and 5 were asked to represent Sutherland House School for a 3-day accredited and nationally recognised course at Portland College.

The programme was developed by the National Citizen Service, which aims to help young people to:

  • Learn new skills
  • Meet new people
  • Find out how to make a difference in the local community

The sessions during the week were varied and each day there were a range of activities the group participated in.

The three days aim to serve as a positive contribution towards the students Preparing for Adulthood sessions and their eventual transition from Sutherland House School.

The five students from Sutherland House School communicated positively with the staff, students and volunteers from Portland College. Details below.

Day 1 - Introductions, climbing and zip line

Upon arriving at Portland College and making introductions, students spent a day on the climbing wall and zip line. Both activities required students to wear safety equipment including harness, hats, ropes and so on.

All the Portland college instructors are fully trained and have a wealth of experience in this unique outdoor setting. The activities required a head for heights and all the students did exceptionally well to participate in all activities.

Day 2 - Walks, planting trees and archery

In the morning, the group went for a walk around Harlow Woods and learned about tree identification, bird sounds and woodland animals. Then, the students helped to plant several trees, shrubs and succulents around the adventure zone.

Later, the group took part in an archery session with the new Lead, Rebecca, who mentioned that we were the first school to use the new equipment. The session was great fun with all students firing arrows into and hitting the targets.

Day 3 - Baking bread and team-building

The group watched a demonstration on how to make and bake bread on an open fire, then whittled some sticks and managed to make their own bread, applying herb or chocolate mixtures as they liked.

In the afternoon, the group participated in three team building exercises, challenges and puzzles. It was a fantastic way to complete their NCS and Portland College were extremely positive about the five students that attended the course, and have invited them back in the future for team building days and new challenges.
